Registered Haflinger stallion standing in 2008
What
is a Haflinger?
Strong and sure-footed, versatile yet dependable, today's Haflinger is
considered by many to be the ideal horse. Of medium height with a
powerful build and a noble head, the Haflinger is chestnut in color,
with a beautiful white mane, and long, flowing tail
to
match. The typical Haflinger personality is straightforward
and
trustworthy, coupled with a calm and willing demeanor.
Originating on the southern slopes of the Tyrolean Alps, the Haflinger
may be found under saddle or pack on a steep mountain trail, skidding
logs on a hillside, or pulling a wagon, farm implement, or the family
buggy. Haflingers successfully compete in dressage, jumping, and
endurance events. They are regularly seen in driving
competitions, showcasing the coachmanship of top handlers like
Prince Philip of England.
Haflingers have proven their worth as work and pleasure horses
everywhere from the hills of Bosnia to the grasslands of Brazil, across
the United States, Canada, Australia, and the frozen traces over the
Himalayas of Tibet. They are renowned world-wide for their
physical strength, legendary willingness to work, even
temperament, ability to thrive on the leanest of rations, and amazing
adaptability to climatic extremes.
We're convinced the Haflinger is the best all-around horse yet
developed, and we invite you to visit our Haflingers at WestWind Ranch.

WestWind Ranch is located just where the east side of California’s Coast Range slopes into the great Central Valley. The property was homesteaded by Winifred’s Grandfather in 1862, and has been continuously owned and operated by her family since that time. Originally a dry land grain farm, the ranch has evolved into a dedicated horse ranch, complete with fenced, irrigated pastures, sheltered stalls, round training corral, large riding arena, and trails over varied types of terrain.
